I'm Scott. I'm a curious, self-motivated and experienced generalist.

You'll find me at my happiest and most useful when I'm working in the areas of marketing, AI, copywriting, UX, self-development, and podcasting. I like to build things, solve problems and help to make people's lives easier and more enjoyable.

A little more about me...

I worked really hard to become a generalist. It goes against everything I was ever taught to do.Find your niche, double-down, specialise... blah blah blah.I like to write, design, build, strategise, problem-solve, edit, produce, analyse, share, listen and bring things to life. Not only do I like to do these things, I think I am good at them. I think I'm probably good at them because I like them.Simple equation: enjoyment + study + creation = happiness.I enjoy a lot of things. I do a lot of things.I used to worry about the phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none". The truth is, the first part of this phrase, "Jack of all trades" was written in the 1600s by a guy that was imprisoned for debt. I have no idea if it was intended to be positive or negative. The dude was locked up, and was probably complimenting a guard to get an extra piece of bread. The second part of this phrase, "master of none" seems to have appeared in the 1700s. There's no writer attributed to this part, and so I've decided it was authored by a drunk pessimist.Anyway, this phrase has paralysed people for over 400 years and I think it's time to kill it off.Every time I've even thought about trying to "specialise" my gut has told me it's the wrong thing to do. It feels unnatural.I wish I could find the source (I stupidly forgot to save it) but I was reading something Pharrell Williams said recently. He was speaking on the topic of creativity and doing multiple things like writing, producing, designing, performing etc.He said something to the effect of, "When you leave this world, leave empty".That's stuck with me since I read it, and it's the perfect way to describe how I feel as a generalist. If I find the actual quote again I'll post it.LEAVE EMPTY. What a goal.So here's a GIF of Lego Pharrell Williams to remind you that it's okay to do a lot of things. You should try a lot of things. You can be good at lots of things.LEAVE EMPTY.

My Work & Projects

I've been freelancing since January 2024. Prior to this, I worked in marketing agencies for ~15 years. This culminated in me successfully selling the agency I was running (SiteVisibility) as MD.Even when I've been working full-time, I've always been the type of person to work on lots of my own projects. I believe it's important to not tie your identity to a job, and always keep a little something for yourself. Here's a snapshot of some of my recent career roles and projects:

As I said, these are just a selection of some of my more recent work projects. I'm always experimenting with something, usually as a way to explore my interests via the mediums of writing or audio.

Because, you know, social proof...

Certifications

I was a "straight A" student up until college. University was never really an option for me because, well, I was poor. Alongside a lot of self-teaching, I've completed hundreds of online courses across learning platforms like Udemy, Coursera etc. The courses shown below are some of the more recent and reputable.

Google From Likes to Leads Certificate
Google Attract and Engage Customers Certificate
Google Foundations of Digital Marketing and E-commerce Certificate
AI Product Manager Nanodegree
Udacity Marketing Analytics Nanodegree
Udacity Business Analytics Nanodegree

If you'd like to work with me, you are working on something you think I'd be interested in, or you just want to connect, you can find me via the links below.Oh, and one final thing. A recent thought I had about generalists. Before you dismiss a generalist for not being specialised in the very specific thing you need help with, consider that they may specialise in the very thing you need help with...and then some.
